the Automatic Transmission Lockup Solenoid is a solenoid present in automatic cars transmissions that causes the torque converter to lock under control of the ECU. It is not needed on manual transmission cars, obviously, so it is frequently hijacked to control other things.

It is pin A8 on OBD0 ECUs.
