{"id":24,"date":"2007-07-23T13:14:16","date_gmt":"2007-07-23T19:14:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mycomputerninja.com\/?p=24"},"modified":"2007-07-23T13:16:27","modified_gmt":"2007-07-23T19:16:27","slug":"dangling-pointers-now-a-danger","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mycomputerninja.com\/?p=24","title":{"rendered":"Dangling Pointers Now a Danger?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I ran across an article on <a href=\"http:\/\/searchsecurity.com\">searchsecurity.com<\/a> about some researchers at WatchFire, inc.  successfully exploiting a dangling pointer error in Microsoft&#8217;s IIS 5.1. <a href=\"http:\/\/searchsecurity.techtarget.com\/originalContent\/0,289142,sid14_gci1265116,00.html\">The article<\/a> describes the issue as &#8220;a common programming error, which until now had been considered simply a quality problem and not a security vulnerability.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>If the guys at Watchfire did figure out how to reliably exploit a dangling pointer, software developers should be in for an interesting ride as companies scramble to fix their errors.  At issue is the technique they use to find the location the &#8220;left-over&#8221; pointer references. This can&#8217;t be simple to do, and I am excited to see the results of their work, presented at the Black Hat Briefings in August.
