Standalone desoldering stations are by far the most effective (and most expensive) tools for desoldering. They generally consist of a hollow-tip Soldering Iron, a vaccum pump or other suction device, a reusable resevoir to collect solder and temperature control circuitry.
A quality desoldering station will last a lifetime. Quality used units can often be found for less than a hundred dollars on ebay. Most name-brand units have user-replaceable parts that can be ordered seperately.
I personally own a Xytronic 988 temp control soldering/desoldering station purchased from Howard Electronics Online for $300 reconditioned. It is my favorite electronics tool, and arguably some of the best value for money I've seen.
Other good brands for desoldering stations:
- Pace
- Metcal
- Hakko
- Weller (beware of their "budget" stuff)
