Please add wisdom and tips here as you see fit!

Some tips for good soldering:

  • Use a relatively fine solder - ideally around the same size in diameter as the holes in the PCB you are dealing with.
  • Never touch solder directly to the iron - instead, apply heat to the pin of the part that is being soldered and/or the pad it is being soldered to.
  • Bring the solder to the joint at a place where it does not make contact with the iron directly but can easily flow into the joint and fill empty space.
  • Be mindful of how quickly you feed solder. If you feed too fast you will end up with messy, blobby solder joints that are often poor connections.
  • Try not to leave the soldering iron in place longer than you have to as you can easily burn up thin traces with an iron set to high heat. Use as little heat as possible to ensure solder flows evenly into the joint.

These tips are no replacement for practice! Find a junk board and practice making clean solder connections yourself before you try it on anything you care about. Please feel free to add your own tips and wisdom to this page.
